Dane County, created in 1836 as a territorial county, is named after Nathan Dane, a delegate to the First Continental Congress, who helped make Wisconsin the last state carved out of the Northwest Territories.

The Cambridge area was mostly settled by Scottish and Norwegian farmers. The village plat was filed in 1847 by Joseph Keyes with the Dane County Register of Deeds. By the 1860s, Cambridge had some 250 residents, mostly retired farmers and shopkeepers.

A cheese factory became the new industry in the 1870s, while the 1880s saw the opening of two banks and the Cambridge News.
